TUNNEL SOUTH PORTAL

No doubt the brickwork was pitched to compensate for the pressures from the
bank
behind. The North Portal failed and needed completely rebuilding in
1903. The South
Portal still does not require rebuilding but the brickwork is somewhat
damaged. The
work in early 2006 is to cope with water drainage from the structure and to
correct the
detachment of the surface of the bricks (spalling) caused by frost action and
postponed
mortar pointing.
