A Few Old Posters collected by G. Freeston
George Freeston's notes on Hotel and Garden
Thomas Shaw, proprietor of the Angel Hotel, Bridge Street, Northampton was quick
to expand his coaching business and link it to the railways - this poster and
the next
are dated 1839. A mention of Blisworth Station implies the
old station at the arch.
An extract from a traveller's report, from Thomas Roscoe's 1839
description of the
main line going north, "...upon emerging the Blisworth Cutting (sic - Roade
Cutting) ...
will not fail to observe the square tower of Blisworth Church peering to the
west ...
we pass over a lofty bridge of one arch, which spans the high road between the
towns
of Towcester and Northampton, and at this point there is a covered staircase
leading
from the railway to Blisworth Station, which is of second class (meaning that
not all
trains will stop there).
The poster below is dated 1875 - an example of the many
'excursions' offered by
railway companies.
